Teen arrested in fatal El Mirage shooting that killed juvenile, wounded another

PHOENIX – A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a shooting that left one minor dead and another hospitalized in a West Valley suburb, police said Friday.

Schiloh Albin Niyibizi of Surprise was booked into the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Facility on Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and several other felony and misdemeanor counts, according to the El Mirage Police Department.

The April 27 shooting occurred in the area near El Mirage and Thunderbird roads.

Officers responded to gunshot calls just after 8 p.m. and found a minor male who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. During the investigation, police learned a second minor had arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds.

That victim is expected to survive.

Detectives spent days piecing together the events that led to the shooting before making the arrest, the department said.

“Gun violence has no place in our community, particularly with juveniles,” El Mirage Police Chief Paul Marzocca said in a statement.

Marzocca credited the city’s gunshot detection system with helping officers respond quickly to the scene and thanked residents who offered help the night of the shooting.

“Their willingness to provide aid and share information with our detectives is a testament to the strong police-community relationship in El Mirage,” Marzocca added.

Police said they expect to release more information on the shooting Monday.
