18-year-old suspect in south Phoenix murder case arrested in Tucson

An 18-year-old murder suspect was arrested in Tucson on Tuesday, a month after he allegedly gunned a man down outside a south Phoenix home, authorities said.

Jeremy Banegas was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix for first-degree murder and discharging a firearm within city limits, according to Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office records. His bond was set at $1.5 million.

Banegas is accused of killing 43-year-old Eddie Carrillo on May 20, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Carrillo was shot in a neighborhood near Central Avenue and Interstate 17 around 9:15 a.m. He died after being taken to a hospital.

Phoenix Police investigators used a variety of methods to identify Banegas as the suspect and track him to Tucson, where a Tucson Police SWAT team helped take him into custody.

After he was arrested, Banegas told police he drove to the crime scene on Second Place, just south of I-17, looking for somebody else when he was approached by Carrillo.

“Eddie was in the front yard and approached the vehicle. A struggle ensued during which Banegas shot the victim and fled from the scene,” Lt. Vince Lewis said in a media advisory.

Banegas’ next court hearing is set for June 30.
