Central Phoenix motel stabbing leaves 1 man dead

PHOENIX — A stabbing at a Central Phoenix motel left a man dead on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The man who died was in his early 50s, his name was not released, according to a Sunday Phoenix Police Department announcement.

At 3:45 p.m., officers responded to calls about an assault near 7th Street and the I- 17 Freeway.

As officers arrived, they found an unresponsive injured man lying on the ground. Emergency personnel treated the man and took him to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said.

Witnesses identified the other man involved in the stabbing who was also injured.

Early in the investigation, police found that there was a fight between the two men while inside a motel room.

The men used objects in the room as weapons, which ended in one of them being fatally stabbed, according to police.

The man who survived claimed self-defense and was released pending the outcome of the investigation. A charging decision will be decided once the investigation is completed.
