Chandler police shoot person who allegedly ran from traffic stop and fired gun

PHOENIX – A person who allegedly ran from a car during traffic stop and fired a gun was shot and wounded by police in Chandler on Thursday night, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 8:15 p.m. near Arizona Avenue and Riggs Road, according to the Chandler Police Department.

When police pulled over a sedan for a civil traffic violation, a passenger allegedly got out and started shooting while running off.

An officer returned fire and pursued the suspect.

Backup units arrived as the person ran behind a building with multiple businesses.

The person eventually came out in front of nearby storage facility and was shot at by multiple officers, police said.

What happened after Chandler police shot suspect?

The suspect sustained a K9 bite and a gunshot wound that isn’t considered life-threatening.

The individual was taken to a hospital in stable condition and will be booked into jail later, police said.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

The Mesa Police Department will investigate the police shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
