Salt River Project to drain sections of Consolidated Canal for maintenance

PHOENIX — Salt River Project announced its plan to drain portions of the Consolidated Canal for maintenance in the east Valley.

Crews will remove silt, replace concrete lining and repair gates along a seven-to-eight-mile stretch from Baseline Road to the 202 Santan Freeway and from Lindsay Road to Mesa Drive, according to a press release.

The project will run from Nov. 20 to Dec. 20 with fish herding and relocation to take place from Nov. 20-24. Crews will start silt removal Nov. 22.

The white amur fish will be moved via hauling trucks to other locations along the canal, according to the release.

Some of SRP’s southside irrigation partners will not get water from the canal during maintenance, and parts of the canal will be closed to bikers and pedestrians, according to the release.

Local governments use these dry-up periods to perform roadwork nearby, and signage will alert people where there will be construction traffic.

SRP plans dry-ups each winter on a rotating 10-year location schedule, according to the release.

These procedures also allow SRP crews to search for invasive species like quagga mussels.
