SAFE Alert issued for missing 80-year-old man who left a note and was last seen in Phoenix

Authorities issued a SAFE Alert for a missing 80-year-old man who was last seen in north Phoenix on Wednesday morning.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a Flock camera caught Avelos traveling east on Olive Avenue near 47th Avenue shortly before 9:15 a.m. His vehicle is a white 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with a license plate BXJ5265.

Prior to that, he left his residence near Carefree Highway and Seventh Avenue around 7 a.m., leaving a note saying he was buying cigarettes.

Avelos, who has dementia, spent most of the morning driving around the West Valley, DPS said.

He is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs about 195 pounds and has gray eyes and brown hair.

SAFE Alerts have replaced Silver Alerts in Arizona as a way to spread the word about missing persons who are 65 and older and missing persons who have dementia or developmental/cognitive disabilities.
