Pregnant woman and child dead after 2-vehicle collision in north Phoenix

A pregnant woman and her child are dead after a two-vehicle collision in north Phoenix on Saturday night, according to authorities.

Police responded around 11:30 p.m. to the area of the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway and 19th Avenue for reports of a crash and identified a woman and man in one car and a man in the other.

The woman was “far along with in pregnancy,” police said, and found in critical condition, while the man in the same vehicle had minor injuries. Phoenix Fire personnel rushed both of them to a nearby hospital, but neither the woman — identified later as 19-year-old Leila Kiani Potts — nor her baby survived.

The driver of the other vehicle involved, an adult man, was uninjured and remained at the scene.

Police said they detected no signs of impairment when speaking with the man, who allegedly ran through a red light while heading east on Beardsley Road.

This is an ongoing investigation.
