Phoenix reaches 100-degree mark for first time in 2018 on Tuesday

PHOENIX — There is no going back now: Phoenix hit 100 degrees for the first time in 2018 on Tuesday, marking the unofficial first day of summer.

The National Weather Service said Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reached the triple-digit mark just before 3 p.m. on April 10.

It was a significant leap from when the desert city marked that milestone the year prior: Phoenix did not see 100-degree temperatures in 2017 until May 3.

In fact, the department said Tuesday’s record was the fourth-earliest 100-degree day the city has ever seen.

But in terms of the city’s history, Tuesday was not the earliest day that Phoenix had ever marked the record.

According to the National Weather Service, the earliest that Phoenix saw 100 degrees was on March 26, 1988. The latest it marked 100 degrees was June 18, 1913.

Phoenix residents should strap in and get ready for the long summer ahead: The average number of days that Phoenix sees 100-plus degree days are 110.

But Phoenix was not the only city to set a record on Tuesday: Its neighbors to the south also saw significant temperatures.

Tucson hit 95 degrees just before 3 p.m. for the first time this year.

However, Phoenix residents may soon be able to see a short break from the heat: The Weather Channel said temperatures could dip into the high 70s this week, before climbing back into the 90s next week.
