Phoenix rain to add to record-breaking totals, high country will see snow

PHOENIX — Phoenix has already seen record-breaking rainfall for the season, but a storm that is expected to move into the area as early as Monday evening will add to the total.

Austin Jamison with the National Weather Service told KTAR News 92.3 FM the rain will likely move through the area between 5 p.m. Monday and 5 p.m. Tuesday, bringing as much as an inch of the wet stuff.

But a majority of people will see anywhere from two-thirds to three-fourths of an inch of rain, he added. Residents in higher elevations could see rain as late as Wednesday.

ABC15 meteorologist Iris Hermosillo said there will be a 60 percent chance of rain on Monday, which will increase to 80 percent Tuesday before falling to 40 percent Wednesday.

Phoenix has recorded more than 8 inches of rain since an insane storm moved through the area last October — double what the Valley normally sees during that timeframe. So far this year, the Valley has measured 2.53 inches of rain, about a half-inch above average.

But the Valley won’t be the only part of the state that will see weather events early this week: Emily Thornton with National Weather Service told KTAR News that the high country will see snow until Wednesday.

The snow is expected to fall as early as Monday, but will get heavier as the week goes on, with as much as a couple feet expected to fall in the San Francisco Peaks.

“It is going to create periods of hazardous travel, but it will definitely be less significant than the last storm,” Thornton said.
