Phoenix breaks a daily heat record on Friday as fall heatwave continues

PHOENIX — Daily heat records are back on the menu as Phoenix broke another one on Friday afternoon in a continued fall heatwave.
The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official records, hit 97 degrees at 2:15 p.m. The previous record of 96 degrees was set in 2014 and 1990.
As of 230 PM MST, Phoenix has set a new record high temperature of 97 degrees for today's date. The previous record was 96 degrees set in 2014 and 1990. #azwx

Phoenix also likely tied a daily low record high of 65 degrees, which was also set in 1897.
Daily heat record a norm in Phoenix this fall
The Valley hasn’t had much time to recover from an unprecedented 21-day streak of record heat that ended last week.
In addition, Phoenix is well on its way to its hottest October on record in a year that already had the hottest June and September.
The average October temperature in Phoenix has been 87 degrees as of Thursday, nearly nine degrees above the normal.
The hottest October in Phoenix history occurred in 2023 with an average temperature of 82.7 degrees.
