Officers fatally shot an armed man after standoff at north Phoenix apartment complex

PHOENIX – Officers fatally shot an armed man Sunday after an hourslong standoff at a north Phoenix apartment complex, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call of a man pointing a gun at himself and firing it inside his apartment near Bell Road and 33rd Avenue around 9:45 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Nearby apartments were evacuated by authorities, and police negotiators spoke with him for around six hours.

The man, 52-year-old David Steinbach, eventually exited his apartment holding a gun around 3:45 p.m.

Steinbach allegedly did not respond to commands to drop the weapon, prompting police to shoot at him.

A waiting ambulance transported Steinbach to the hospital after he received first aid at the scene, police said. He did not survive his injuries.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety will be investigating the police shooting.
