Suspect arrested after officer-involved shooting in north Phoenix

PHOENIX — Phoenix police arrested and released the identity of the man involved in the officer-involved shooting that took place on Sunday in north Phoenix.

The shooting was reported around 2:30 p.m., authorities said.

Sam Perone, 46, was taken to a nearby hospital after an officer shot him, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The incident occurred during a traffic stop near the area of 25th Place and Cactus Road. Cactus Road was closed off for investigation.

Police said the officer involved was also taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons. He was later released.

Authorities revealed Perone and the officer got into a physical altercation at the stop before things escalated.

The officer had asked to see Perone’s driver’s license before he didn’t comply and “verbal aggression” turned into assault.

Perone tried to take the officer’s gun from its holster and a witness came over to help prevent that, authorities said. While Perone didn’t get a hold of the gun, the officer fired a shot that hit Perone in a lower extremity.

Following the shot, more officers arrived and helped the Phoenix Fire Department wrap a tourniquet on Perone.

Perone was discharged from the hospital on Monday afternoon, authorities said. The 46-year-old was booked for felony aggravated assault on a police officer.
