Tempe Fire Medical Rescue has officially opened its new Fire Station No. 2

PHOENIX — A new Tempe fire station officially opened over the weekend.

Fire Station No. 2 at 3025 S. Hardy Drive was built on the same parcel of land as a 1972 fire station, which only had room for two fire trucks and crew members.

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods, several City Councilmembers and fire personnel gathered on Sunday to celebrate its opening with a symbolic cutting of a fire hose rather than a traditional ribbon-cutting.

Despite the grand opening event, the new Tempe fire station isn’t 100% complete.

Phase Two of the project is slated to end in fall 2025.

When that’s done, Fire Station No. 2 will have a total of 16,000 square feet of space and enough room for six fire trucks.

What are the amenities at the new Tempe fire station?

The new fire station at 3025 S. Hardy Drive has various modernized amenities that will both help firefighters more effectively respond to emergencies while protecting their long-term well-being.

There will be advanced life support tools, a dedicated space for training and operations and upgraded systems specifically designed to help crews working 24-hour shifts stay healthy.

For instance, there will be dedicated decontamination areas to reduce firefighters’ exposure to carcinogens.

There will also be 16 dorms and an alerting system to minimize sleep disruptions.

It will also host one of Tempe’s two hazardous materials response teams, which will respond to hazmat incidents across the Valley.

New Tempe fire station honors firefighter who died of work-related cancer

A Tuesday announcement from the Tempe Fire Department said Fire Station No. 2 also serves as a tribute to Tommy Arriaga, a medical rescue firefighter who died in 2020 from work-related cancer.

Arriaga, who served out of the station before its recent renovations, is honored through a steel sculpture by Arizona artist Kevin Berry.

In addition to the statue on the exterior, there will also be a memorial locker with his helmet, gear and personal items. He was 36 when he died.
