Arizonans turned in 6,257 pounds of meds during National Drug Take Back Day

PHOENIX — More than 3 tons of drugs were collected in Arizona in the latest National Drug Take Back Day, authorities said.

Arizona’s 56 collection sites totaled 6,257 pounds of expired, unwanted or unused medications during the April 26 event, the Drug Enforcement Agency announced in a press release on Friday.

Nationally, 620,321 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in for safe disposal at 4,590 collection sites.

Since the first Take Back Day in 2010, more than 19.8 million pounds of medications have been collected during the event, which is held twice a year. Take Back Days are typically held during the last Saturdays of April and October.

Unneeded and expired prescription drugs can also be disposed of year-round at drop boxes inside pharmacies, hospitals and businesses across Arizona.
