President Trump takes interest in Nancy Guthrie case as investigation continues

PHOENIX — Federal authorities could be getting more involved in the investigation into what happened to Nancy Guthrie.

The 84-year-old mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie hasn’t been seen since she was dropped off at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills area on Saturday night.

Pima County Sheriff’s Department investigators believe she was taken against her will, but no suspects or persons of interest have been identified.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday night he was directing “all federal law enforcement” to be at the disposal of the Guthrie family and local authorities.

“I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY. We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely. The prayers of our Nation are with her and her family. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT NANCY!” Trump said in a post from his Truth Social account.

The FBI has already been supporting the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said during a press conference Thursday that he hasn’t heard directly from Trump, but he appreciates the president’s offer.

“We’ve always worked well with all of our partners in law enforcement. Maybe it’s something unique to southern Arizona, and the rest of the country doesn’t see that,” Nanos said.

Meanwhile, Axios reported that FBI Director Kash Patel was planning a trip to Tucson. However, Heith Janke, special agent in charge of the FBI Phoenix office, indicated the trip was planned before Nancy Guthrie went missing.

“He does have a trip scheduled to Tucson that was pre-scheduled before this, but he is receiving consistent and constant updates from our team here,” Janke said during Thursday’s press conference.

Janke didn’t say when Patel was expected to be in Arizona.

Family of Nancy Guthrie pleads for her safe return

Savannah Guthrie and her two siblings posted an emotional video to social media on Wednesday evening, pleading for their mother to be returned safely.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call authorities at 520-351-4900, 520-88-CRIME (2-7463) or 911. Tips to 88-CRIME that lead to an arrest could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,500.

The “Today” show opened with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance for a fourth day Thursday, playing the family’s video message in its entirety.

Savannah Guthrie had been scheduled to cover the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, but NBC Sports announced Tuesday she will miss the event “as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time.”
