More rain hits Phoenix area; flash flood warning issued

PHOENIX – A flash flood warning was issued for a northeastern portion of metro Phoenix as more rain fell hard and fast Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix said the advisory for the Apache Junction area and Fountain Hills was scheduled to last until 12:15 p.m.

The Flood Control District of Maricopa County map said a gauge at the Cloudburst Wash in Fountain Hills collected 2.13 inches of rain over six hours, while a gauge in Apache Junction recorded 1.42 inches during the same period.

It was the second straight day some part of the Valley was hammered by rain.

Freeways were dotted with wrecks as drivers, particularly in the suburbs east of Phoenix, were inundated by the storm.

Visibility was problematic along Loop 202 Santan Freeway, as drivers made their way from home around 7 a.m. in darkness that resembled the middle of the night.

The chance of more rain in the evening was 40%, the weather service said. By Thursday morning that was down to 20%.
