Driving rain Tuesday triggers flash flood warning in Maricopa County

PHOENIX – A flash flood warning for Maricopa County was issued Tuesday morning as heavy rain slammed parts of the East Valley.

The National Weather Service said the warning would expire at 12:15 p.m.

A similar warning for the Chandler-Higley area was to expire at noon, triggered in part by 2.72 inches of rain falling in six hours, and more than 3 inches in 24 hours.

The measurements were taken at the Chandler Municipal Airport gauge, according to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

Rain fell in other parts of metro Phoenix on Tuesday, but nothing like the downpour in the East Valley. Early in the morning, Phoenix Sky Harbor collected one-tenth of an inch of rain, pushing the gauge there to 2 inches since June 15.

That’s less than a half-inch of reaching the 2.43-inch average rainfall for the monsoon season, which ends Sept. 30.
