US 60 reopens in both directions east of Phoenix after flooding

PHOENIX – Both directions of U.S. 60 east of Phoenix reopened Thursday evening after flooding from a rainstorm shut down a section of the highway.

U.S. 60 between Superior and Miami reopened around 5 p.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation said, after the highway was closed early Wednesday morning.

Rain on Tuesday left behind standing water, rocks and debris in the roadway, according to ADOT.

There was no estimated time for reopening, but the transportation agency said to expect an extended shutdown.

ADOT crews worked around the clock to repair the roadway at the Bloody Tanks Wash near the Miami closure, with 169 truckloads of rock being used to shore up the roadway.

Crews also removed the damaged guardrail and cleared debris from drainage systems to reduce the risk of future flood damage, according to a press release.
