Man killed in hit-and-run collision in Mesa after getting out of his truck

A fatal Mesa hit-and-run killed 54-year-old Jose Luis Garcia. The suspect, who drove an older, silver passenger truck, is at large, Mesa Police said.

PHOENIX — A 54-year-old man died in a Mesa hit-and-run on Saturday night, authorities said.

Jose Garcia was driving his truck out of a private drive near Stapley and University drives before the collision, according to the Mesa Police Department.

An unidentified object fell out of Garcia’s vehicle while it was in motion.

Garcia then stopped his vehicle in the roadway and left on foot to retrieve the object, police said.

A silver passenger truck that was traveling northbound on Stapley Street struck Garcia while he was walking back to his vehicle.

Police believe the truck was an older model. The suspect fled from the scene after the collision.

Investigators didn’t find any physical evidence left on the scene.

Mesa Police urge anyone who has information that can help them catch the suspect to call 480-644-2211.

Investigators believe the suspect vehicle may have front end damage due to the collision.
