Man in wheelchair dies after being hit by SUV in south Phoenix

PHOENIX — A man in a wheelchair is dead after being hit by an SUV in south Phoenix on Saturday evening, according to authorities.

Phoenix police responded to a crash near Southern and Central avenues around 6:20 p.m. and found a 77-year-old man in critical condition.

Paramedics took the injured man to a hospital, where he later died.

Detectives believe the 77-year-old man was trying to cross Southern Avenue and was mid-block when he was hit by a Jeep Liberty driven by a 61-year-old man.

The 61-year-old remained at the scene and was uninjured. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.

The investigation remains ongoing.
