PHOENIX — A Glendale man accused of murdering and decapitating his mother has been indicted, prosecutors announced on Monday.

A grand jury leveled the formal accusation against 25-year-old Alejandro David Gonzalez last Thursday, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

He is currently in jail with a $1 million cash bond.

The crime Gonzalez is accused of took place in an apartment near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road Sept. 27.

Cruz Rubio, Gonzalez’s mother, had been initially found by her family, who got suspicious when she didn’t show up to a gathering they planned as a surprise birthday party for her.

They had entered the apartment to find her body, along with a knife in the kitchen sink with blood and hair, police said.

Gonzalez, who had been recently released from prison, also allegedly stole a car his aunt gave his mother.
