Arizona man gets life sentence for fatal shooting in 2024

An Arizona man who shot three people, killing one, received a life sentence last week, authorities announced Wednesday.

Derick Lee Myron, 46, of Tuba City stole a truck and ran over the person he killed after the shooting, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

On Feb. 5, a federal jury found Myron guilty on the following 11 charges:

• One count of second-degree murder
• Three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon
• Two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury
• Four counts of discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence
• One count of robbery

Myron, a member of the Hopi Tribe, committed the crimes on April 29, 2024, on Navajo Nation territory.

He fatally shot an unarmed person and seriously injured the other two victims, prosecutors said. He then ran over the deceased victim with a stolen truck.

He abandoned the truck in a canyon in the Cameron community south of Tuba City and evaded arrest for two days by hiding in the Moenkopi Wash.

“Justice cannot restore a life lost to senseless violence, but it is always worth pursuing. My thoughts are with the victims of this terrible crime and their families,” Timothy Courchaine, U.S. attorney for the District of Arizona, said in a press release. “I am thankful for the collaborative efforts of our law enforcement partners, whose tireless work led to the conviction and sentence in this case.”

Details about shooting that led to life sentence

According to a criminal complaint, family members had indicated that Myron and the mother of his children had been separated for a couple of years and that Myron had become jealous that she was in a relationship.

At one point, witnesses said Myron was yelling that he did not want the boyfriend around his children, the complaint states.

The man who was killed, identified in court records by the initials C.G., had tried to hide behind a vehicle when Myron came out of a home and fired at him. The complaint stated that Myron had taken the keys to one of the victim’s trucks and ran over C.G.

The complaint also states Myron had fired multiple times, striking the woman in the left leg. The boyfriend also was wounded.
