Man hospitalized after getting shot by Phoenix police officer

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer shot a man carrying a gun on Saturday night, authorities said.

Police responded to an unrelated call near 28th and Larkspur drives, north of Cactus Road, around 11:30 p.m. when the suspect began yelling at officers as they were getting back into their vehicles, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The male suspect, armed with a handgun, approached the officers and stood behind a block wall, raised his gun over the fence and fired one time at officers, authorities said.

Officers then shot back at the man and struck him.

The suspect tried to run away north on 28th Drive but fell to the ground after a short distance due to his injuries.

Officers then gave the man orders and took him into custody.

Paramedics arrived and began giving the man treatment before taking him to the hospital.

Authorities said the man underwent surgery and is being treated for a non-life-threatening injury.
