Man drowns at popular swimming spot in northern Arizona

PHOENIX — A 62-year-old man drowned at a Fossil Creek, a popular swimming area in northern Arizona, on Thursday, authorities said.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that the man, identified as Ronald Hugh Henry, drowned at the remote “toilet bowl” area.

Henry’s body was recovered around 3:45 p.m.

Two emergency calls were placed within 15 minutes of each other — around noon — regarding the drowning.

One of the emergency calls was from a person who was with Henry, a Phoenix resident.

First responders with Pine-Strawberry Fire responded to the Fossil Springs Trailhead.

The Gila County Dive Team and Arizona Department of Public Safety were also involved in the response.

The investigation is ongoing.

Fossil Creek is located in Strawberry, about 70 miles south of Flagstaff.
