Maricopa County Attorney says Isabella Comas case remains active after charges dismissed

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said Friday that the investigation into the disappearance of Isabella Comas remains active, days after her office dropped charges against the 21-year-old Avondale woman’s romantic partner, who police have identified as a person of interest.

Mitchell said on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce & Gaydos that she has met with detectives and members of Comas’ family.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Mitchell said. “I’ve personally met with the investigative team from Avondale PD. They’re doing a great job.”

Charges against Tommy Rodriguez, 39, were dismissed without prejudice on Thursday at the state’s request, meaning they could be refiled, as reported by ABC15. Rodriguez had been facing theft and criminal damage charges tied to Comas’ car.

Mitchell did not name Rodriguez but said her office is waiting for police to develop more information before moving forward.

“At this point we’re going to step back and wait for the additional investigative information to be developed,” she said, adding that her office is in constant contact with Avondale Police investigators.

Mitchell said she wanted to assure the family her office is committed to pursuing justice.

“I wanted to meet with them personally as the elected county attorney to give them my assurance that we are putting everything we can into this, that we care very deeply about what they’re going through,” she said.

The Isabella Comas disappearance

Comas, 21, was last seen by a friend on Jan. 11. Her red Hyundai Sonata was found two days later in Phoenix, and a Turquoise Alert was issued.

Police later revealed a large amount of blood was found in the vehicle and that the front passenger seat was missing. Rodriguez was believed to have been driving the car in the Globe area in the early morning hours of Jan. 12.
