Death toll is now at 2 after devastating flash flooding at Grand Canyon National Park

Officials announced Monday morning that a second body has been recovered in the wake of Saturday’s devastating flash flooding at Grand Canyon National Park.

The National Park Service did not immediately say where or when the second body was found.

The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River on Sunday.

Search-and-rescue efforts continued Monday for about 15 people who remain missing. Over 60 hikers have been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail since Saturday’s flash flooding.

The following areas of the Grand Canyon are closed until further notice:

• Phantom Ranch
• Bright Angel Campground
• Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins
• North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch

Approximately 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline was damaged or destroyed by the flooding, officials said.

As a result, Stage 4 water restrictions go into effect on the South Rim at noon Monday.

Additionally, all South Rim hotels are closed to overnight guests for the foreseeable future.

Grand Canyon National Park remains open for day use — including South Rim food and beverage services — and dry camping.
