PHOENIX – Early unofficial results have been released for Glendale’s special election regarding the massive VAI Resort project.

Proposition 401 has the “No” vote leading 50.27% to 49.73%, while Proposition 402 has the “Yes” vote leading 51.68% to 48.32%.

A total of 25,922 votes were cast and there was a turnout of 20.92%

The election covers two ballot initiatives related to the $1 billion VAI Resort.

Proposition 401 would allow office buildings to be built south of Cardinals Way, between 94th and 95th avenues as part of the project, while Proposition 402 would change the zoning rules for commercial development on the land. If both propositions pass, the general plan and zoning changes that were previously approved by the Glendale City Council would be upheld.

The 1,100-room hotel within a 60-acre entertainment complex is expected to open later this year after multiple delays. If the propositions are rejected, the plan could be put to a halt.

Ballots for the all-mail elections were sent automatically to every eligible voter in Goodyear and Glendale in April.

Let the company build whatever they want, just keep taxpayers from having to subsidize any of it through buying parking spots or whatever other crazy plan they have to bleed tax money to the private entity.
