Oink, oink, oink: Arizona Humane Society seeks new homes for 3 pet pigs

The Arizona Humane Society is trying to find new homes for three pet pigs that were surrendered to the Phoenix-based animal welfare group.

The previous owners of 2-year-old Hamilton, 1-year-old Fancy Francois and 1-year-old Kissin Kyle gave them up because they could no longer provide the care the animals needed.

The Arizona Humane Society is housing the neutered male potbellied pigs at its South Mountain Campus and waiving their adoption fees.

The organization usually works with specialized rescue groups for exotic animals, but the ones that take pigs did not have space for this trio.

Potential adopters can view the pigs’ profiles on the Arizona Humane Society’s website.

What to know before adopting pet pigs

Potbellied pigs reach full size when they are 4 or 5 years old and typically weigh between 90 and 150 pounds, but they can grow to more than 200 pounds.

They are intelligent, social animals, but anybody thinking about taking them in should consider the following things that make them different from traditional pets:

• They need companionship and should be adopted together with one or more other pigs or into homes that already have a pet pig. However, they should be kept separate from dogs.
• They are not permitted in some cities or HOAs, so check your local regulations.
• They are a long-term commitment and can live 15 to 20 years.
• Their hooves and tusks must be regularly maintained.
• They have a natural tendency to root, so they might dig up yards.
• In the Arizona heat, they need access to shade, fresh water and a kiddie pool or mud area to keep cool.
