Arizona attorney general investigates steep rise in firefighting equipment prices

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced an investigation Wednesday into potentially anticompetitive pricing in the firetruck industry, saying she is concerned manufacturers may be driving up costs.

Mayes said districts across the state have reported a sharp increase in the cost of essential equipment, including aerial ladder trucks, pumper engines, water tankers and rescue vehicles.

“Arizona’s firefighters run toward danger to protect the rest of us, and they shouldn’t have to do it with equipment that’s falling apart because corporate greed has priced them out of the repairs and replacements they need,” Mayes said Wednesday.

The Democratic attorney general said fire departments have also reported longer delivery times, sometimes forcing them to wait years for new equipment.

Firefighters endorse Kris Mayes’ reelection campaign

One day after Mayes announced the investigation, her office said the Professional Firefighters of Arizona had endorsed her reelection campaign ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.

The organization represents more than 9,000 first responders across Arizona, according to Mayes’ office.

Dan Frieberg, the organization’s president, said its members are proud to support Mayes.

“She’s been an incredible asset and a real friend and partner of the Arizona fire service,” Frieberg said in Thursday’s announcement. She understands and prioritizes the needs of the Arizona fire service.”
