Gate Fire in north Scottsdale forcing evacuations, road closures

PHOENIX — A new blaze called the Gate Fire forced evacuations and road closures in north Scottsdale on Thursday, authorities said.

The 100-acre fire evacuated residents in the neighborhood near 128th Street south of Ranch Gate Road around 2:30 p.m., according to the Scottsdale Police Department.

At 6:04 p.m. the department announced it would begin opening the roadways permitting normal neighborhood traffic.

Residents off La Junta Road and Buckskin Trail were also evacuated, police said. Other homes east of Ranch Gate Road and 132nd Street were evacuated, but most of the structures are under construction.

Several fire and police units were on scene and the blaze was moving northeast.

The Gate Fire, originally called the Sand Hills Fire, was the second near metro Phoenix to force evacuations on Thursday.

Authorities ordered evacuations as the Siphon Fire threatens the community of Tortilla Flat near Canyon Lake, east of metro Phoenix.

That fire had burned 2,350 acres with no containment as of Wednesday evening, authorities said.

No other information was immediately available.
