Former KTAR broadcaster and Valley television Anchor Frank Camacho dies at 75

PHOENIX — Longtime Valley television Anchor Frank Camacho died at age 75 on Friday, his family announced in a press release.

Camacho was known for his more than 30 years in the news industry, starting in radio in 1975 with KRUX and at KTAR News in 1978.

With KTAR News, Camacho covered the 100-year floods, which hit the Valley in 1977 and 1978.

He also broke barriers as one of the first Mexican-American TV anchors in Arizona with KPHO and KTVK-TV in Phoenix.

His career highlights include interviews with U.S. presidents Gerald Ford and Barack Obama. He also won the National Television Academy Silver Circle Award in 2007.

Camacho, born in Laveen, was a social justice activist, Catholic and a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants.

He is survived by his wife Margie Camacho, their six children, 10 grandchildren and dog, Obi.

The family has requested donations to the Cancer Research Institute, Hospice of the Valley and Kino Border Initiative in place of flowers.

A celebration of life has not yet been announced. His family has requested privacy as they mourn the death of the Valley icon.
