Former Arizona doctor pleads guilty in murder-for-hire plot

PHOENIX – A former Arizona doctor is heading to prison for his role in a murder-for-hire plot and the illegal distribution of prescription drugs.

Glenn Gary Robertson agreed last month to plead guilty to attempted first-degree murder, illegally conducting an enterprise and illegal administration of a narcotic drug.

Robertson tried to hire a hitman to kill the woman he thought reported him for illegally prescribing drugs, according to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

According to the plea agreement filed Dec. 16 in Cochise County, Robertson hired an undercover FBI agent acting as a hitman and provided the agent with a scoped rifle to kill the woman.

Robertson, who practiced internal medicine in Benson, was under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration for his prescribing practices when the murder-for-hire plot was uncovered in early 2019, authorities said.

He was accused of illegally distributing OxyContin in partnership with an accused drug dealer in Cochise County from February 2017 to November 2018.

The Arizona Medical Board suspended his license in June 2018 and revoked it in December of that year for prescribing Ritalin to a woman he didn’t examine.

Authorities said the murder plot targeted the woman he believed reported him to the board.

Robertson agreed to serve 12.5 years in prison for the attempted murder charge with a concurrent 8.75 years for the illegal enterprise charge. Those sentences will be followed by seven years on the drug charge if the deal is approved during a Jan. 27 hearing.
