Arizona drivers can now carry digital copies of vehicle registration and title

Arizona drivers can now store their vehicle registration and title in the state’s digital wallet app, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The new feature in Arizona Wallet allows users to view vehicle documents, receive alerts before their registration expires.

“ADOT MVD is happy to once again help get Arizona residents out of the line and safely on the road,” Michael Cryderman, director of the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division, said in a news release.

Does this mean Arizona drivers can drive with an empty glove box?

The simple answer is no.

While the new Arizona Wallet feature lets drivers pull up their vehicle registration and title on a smartphone, ADOT is urging residents to continue carrying physical copies of those documents, along with proof of insurance, in their vehicles.

“It is encouraged to carry your physical ID and physical vehicle registration information as adoption and use cases continue to grow for the digital wallet,” ADOT spokesperson Bill Lamareaux told KTAR News 92.3 FM. “People should still keep the physical documents for instances where the officer or agency does not have a way to verify or confirm the digital version.”

In short, this is a convenience, not a replacement for the paperwork in your glove box — at least not yet.

Prior to the app, the state previously allowed residents to store their digital ID in their Apple, Google or Samsung wallets.
