Crews get brush fire in north Phoenix near Cave Creek Road under control

PHOENIX — A brush fire believed to have been started by a crashed remote control airplane in north Phoenix was successfully put out early Monday, according to authorities.

A fire department spokesman said the 300-acre Jomax Fire near Cave Creek and Jomax roads was officially extinguished around 6:30 a.m. The roads had already been reopened earlier.

The fire had been brought under control Sunday around 6:45 p.m.

Authorities said someone interviewed at the scene admitted his small remote control airplane crashed at around 2:30 p.m. and started the fire, which jumped Sonoran Parkway and was up against Cave Creek Road.

No structures were threatened and no evacuations were made, according to authorities.

Fire units from Scottsdale, Glendale, Daisy Mountain, Rural Metro and Guadalupe are also assisted with the brush fire.

The fire, first reported around 3 p.m., burned through a wash and was upgraded to a third alarm.
