Phoenix given Certified Autism Center designation, is nation’s largest municipality with honor

The City of Phoenix became the largest municipality in the United States to be designated as a Certified Autism Center, the city announced Thursday.

The certification followed reviews performed by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) across the city’s operations. To earn the designation, more than 80% of city employees in front-facing roles were specially trained to help people who are autistic or sensory-sensitive.

“Phoenix prides itself on a community where everyone is able to thrive, and we are especially proud that the City of Phoenix is now a Certified Autism Center,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a news release. “With thousands of daily visitors to our many facilities, parks and destinations, we are continuously improving to meet the needs of our entire community, including the unique needs of autistic individuals.

“As we strive to be a global model for accessibility, I’m especially grateful to Councilwoman Debra Stark for her leadership to make Phoenix more welcoming for all.”

Stark led the Strategic Workgroup on Accessibility task force that helped implement multiple inclusive efforts:

• Different standards for design on newly built homes
• Improving navigation for those with low or no vision
• Better hearing technology for the council chambers

“Earning the Certified Autism Center designation shows how deeply Phoenix values inclusivity and access,” Stark said. “Our staff worked diligently to complete this important training, and this certification moves us closer to a city where everyone, regardless of ability, can help improve Phoenix.”
