PHOENIX – The Chandler Fire Department earned a special Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation, the city of Chandler announced on Wednesday.

The designation was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) after at least 80% of the department underwent specialized training to learn how to better communicate with autistic individuals.

“Our mission has always been to protect and serve every resident with care and compassion,” Chandler Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins said in a release.

“Earning the Certified Autism Center designation strengthens our ability to treat patients with autism and respond during emergencies. The training that we’ve undergone will ensure that people feel safe and supported during critical moments.”

The training also taught fire personnel how to interact with those who experience sensory sensitivity.

When scenarios with autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals arise, Chandler Fire will be able to apply specific inclusive-driven strategies when responding to these situations.

“Chandler Fire Department’s commitment to specialized training reflects their commitment and dedication to providing the best care for autistic individuals and ensuring they can respond appropriately in critical and emergency situations,” IBCCES board chairman Myron Pincomb said in a release. “We are thrilled to partner with the Chandler Fire Department and recognize them as a Certified Autism Center.”
