Camelback Mountain hiker hospitalized in critical condition after rescue

PHOENIX – A woman was hospitalized in critical condition with apparent heat-related injuries after being rescued from Camelback Mountain in Phoenix on Monday, authorities said.

She was one of four people who needed help after getting overcome by the heat at the popular east Phoenix hiking area, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Rescue crews were dispatched around 11 a.m. to help hikers suffering from heat-related injuries on different parts of the Echo Canyon Trail.

Three of the hikers were airlifted off the mountain by helicopter, and a “big wheel” stretcher was used to extract the other patient.

Two of the rescued hikers were taken to the hospital. The second patient was listed in stable condition.

The temperature was about 100 degrees in Phoenix when the rescue crews were deployed, and the daily weather forecast called for highs near 110.
