1 person dead, 4 others rescued in hiking incident near Gold Canyon

PHOENIX — One person has died and four others were rescued in a hiking incident in Wave Cave Trail near Gold Canyon on Sunday, authorities said.

Mesa Fire Department responded to a call for a mountain rescue for five people due to heat issues, a firefighter with the Superstition Fire and Medical District said.

Upon arrival, authorities said one of the people was found unresponsive.

Fellow hikers began resuscitation efforts before first responders arrived, but the person was pronounced dead on scene.

Four others were treated on the scene and assisted down the trail but refused medical transportation.
