Man who died in bee attack at Scottsdale senior living facility identified

PHOENIX – The man who died after bees attacked workers at a north Scottsdale senior living facility on Monday morning has been identified.

Nicolas Lopez Soto, 65, of Gilbert was using a lift and removing stucco from a side column near the roof area of the Vi at Silverstone community, near Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads, around 9:30 a.m. when the attack occurred, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.

Soto and another man were attacked by bees and used the lift to go back to ground-level, but Soto was already unconscious before they exited the lift, police said.

CPR was performed on Soto before he was taken to the hospital. He was determined to be dead around 10:15 a.m.

Authorities said Soto had “numerous” bee strings all across his body. The other man had two dozen bee stings on his body and was also taken to the hospital. A third man was also hospitalized after he suffered about a dozen bee stings, authorities said

Aside from Soto, the other two men were in stable condition but were held for observation, authorities said.

Scottsdale Police said the senior living community contracted the men to prepare the wall for a beekeeper to take care of a beehive.

Scottsdale Police and the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner are investigating Soto’s death.
