Man, children and firefighters stung in Surprise by aggressive swarm

PHOENIX — A Surprise man was surprised to find a bee hive while checking his mail box in the area of Greenway Road and 180th Avenue.

The bees became aggressive, stinging the man multiple times, Surprise fire officials announced Monday evening. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Once firefighters arrived after the man was stung, a group of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years old were riding their bikes in the area. They were also stung by the swarm of bees, along with four firefighters. The firefighters ran to the children and put them inside their fire engine to stop them from further stinging by the swarming bees.

Five children were treated on the scene but none were transported after consulting with parents. None of the children were stung more than twice and none were allergic to bees.

A beekeeper was called to the area, which was restricted for a short time Monday.
