Armed man shot by police in Phoenix last week jailed after release from hospital

PHOENIX — An Arizona man shot by Phoenix police after allegedly firing at officers in late December has been released from the hospital.

Arieus Amaree Potts was booked into jail in Maricopa County on Monday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Potts allegedly stood behind a block wall, raised a handgun over the fence and fired one time at officers before midnight on Dec. 27, police said.

He is facing one felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

What happened before the suspect was shot by Phoenix police?

The late December incident took place while police were responding to an unrelated call in the area of 28th and Larkspur drives, north of Cactus Road.

Potts allegedly started yelling at officers as they were getting back into their vehicles before firing a shot toward officers, police said.

In response, the Phoenix police officers returned fire, striking him.

He allegedly fled on foot before falling to the ground due to his injuries.

Police said Potts underwent surgery and received treatment for his non-life-threatening injury.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Potts is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
