Arizona Supreme Court orders judges to expedite cases involving upcoming election

PHOENIX – Anticipating legal challenges to next month’s results, the Arizona Supreme Court is ordering state Superior Court judges to expedite cases involving the 2024 general election.

The state’s high court issued an administrative order on Tuesday with the goal of ensuring that disputes over the results of the Nov. 5 election are resolved within existing statutory deadlines.

“In an election contest, judgment must be entered by the trial court so that sufficient time remains for consideration of an appeal, if any, and a potential remand. Giving priority to adjudicating an election contest may necessitate the delay of other court proceedings,” the order says.

Specifically, trial courts must issue appealable judgements in cases involving presidential electors by 1 p.m. on Dec. 6, less than two weeks before the Electoral College records its votes for president and vice president on Dec. 17.

Under Arizona law, the Supreme Court has administrative supervision over all courts in the state.
