Mina Fire near Yarnell reaches near-full containment, evacuations lowered

The Mina Fire that started near Yarnell northwest of the Valley on Saturday was nearly fully contained by Sunday, authorities said.

Zones 2408, 2411 and 2414 were quickly placed in “GO” status on the state’s emergency alert system around 4:40 p.m. Saturday, signaling there was life-threatening danger in the area. The alerts were lowered to “SET” by the end of the day and placed in “READY” on Sunday evening.

Forward progress was stopped with the fire initially mapped at 30 acres. After the evening’s operations, the fire spanned 24 acres and was 70% contained, according to DFFM. It did not grow as containment reached 90% by Sunday evening.

Shooting at Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District leaves 5 juveniles injured

Five juveniles were left injured on Saturday night after a shooting at the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale, authorities said.

The Glendale Police Department arrived around 9 p.m. to the area of Glendale and 91st avenues after receiving calls about the shooting.

No suspect thought to be involved in the Fourth of July incident has been found, and all five victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Pocket Fire near Sedona grows to more than 25,000 acres, containment level reaches 38%

The Pocket Fire burning north of Sedona grew to 25,597 acres, but fire crews managed to push containment to 38%, authorities said Sunday.

More than 1,000 personnel are on the lines as the landscape and weather present unique challenges this weekend. While the wildfire has not crossed any management action points established by incident command, officials are tracking shifts in the weather that could test their progress.

“This morning, coming out of Seven Canyons and then out of Enchantment, the crews took the trail system and they’re working their way up towards the fire’s edge looking to see if it’s in a position for them to grab it and start cutting some direct handline around the fire once the air quality improves,” Anthony Rapoza, Operations Section Trainee with California Team 6, said in a Sunday video update. “So, we’ll look to support that effort with some aviation assets as well.”

Fire behavior could remain unpredictable Sunday. After a multi-day stretch of consistent weather, authorities are tracking a chance of thunderstorms. The incoming weather system brings the threat of lightning and erratic outflow winds, but little to no actual rainfall. Coupled with critically dry fuels, authorities warned that the combination of lightning, low moisture and shifting winds creates a dangerous environment for firefighters.

Spinato’s planning new Goodyear location, relocating north Phoenix restaurant

Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen is heading to the West Valley.

The Valley-born pizza staple, which has established a heavy presence across the Phoenix metro area and inside the state’s premier sports venues, is officially expanding to the West Valley with plans to open a Goodyear location in late 2027.

The family- and employee-owned company signed a lease with Globe Corporation to construct a ground-up facility at GSQ-Goodyear Civic Square, located at the northwest corner of 150th Drive and McDowell Road.

Indoor shooting range C2 Tactical opens 1st franchise location in Mesa

C2 Tactical opened its first franchise location of the Valley-based indoor shooting range and training facility on Thursday in Mesa.

The new facility, located near Ellsworth and Pecos roads in the Mesa Gateway Airport area, offers 23 lanes in its shooting range, a simulation room, training areas and a VIP suite, all spanning 23,000 square feet.

The concept also features a firearms and accessories shop.

C2 Tactical previously had two locations in Tempe and Scottsdale, while the new location is owned and operated by East Valley-based mother-and-son tandem Tina and Turner Drake.
