Mina Fire near Yarnell reaches near-full containment, evacuations lowered

The Mina Fire that started near Yarnell northwest of the Valley on Saturday was nearly fully contained by Sunday, authorities said.

Zones 2408, 2411 and 2414 were quickly placed in “GO” status on the state’s emergency alert system around 4:40 p.m. Saturday, signaling there was life-threatening danger in the area. The alerts were lowered to “SET” by the end of the day and placed in “READY” on Sunday evening.

Forward progress was stopped with the fire initially mapped at 30 acres. After the evening’s operations, the fire spanned 24 acres and was 70% contained, according to DFFM. It did not grow as containment reached 90% by Sunday evening.

Both directions of SR 89 were closed at milepost 275 as the response began, but the Arizona Department of Transportation has since reopened the highway.

DFFM said the cause of the blaze has not been determined and is under investigation.

Responding personnel included three Type 2 hand crews, one dozer and a task force that included five engines and a water tender.

The blaze started as crews are also fighting the Pocket Fire near Sedona, which has grown to more than 25,000 acres, as of Saturday morning.
