3.3 magnitude earthquake shakes things up near Flagstaff

PHOENIX – If you felt the earth move under your feet Tuesday morning in northern Arizona, it wasn’t your imagination.

U.S. Geological Survey reported that a little earthquake shook things up near Flagstaff at 9:08 a.m.

The temblor was centered about 8 miles east of Flagstaff near Walnut Canyon National Monument, south of Interstate 40.

The quake registered 3.3 on the Richter magnitude scale. That level can be felt but is considered minor.

Hundreds of earthquakes occur in Arizona each year, mostly in the northern part of the state, but it’s rare that they are strong enough to be felt, according to the Arizona Geological Survey.

A recent notable exception was in 2015, when several quakes near Black Canyon City, the largest at 4.1 magnitude, rattled the Phoenix area.
