Suspect seriously injured after fleeing police, crashing on US 60/Grand Avenue

A portion of US 60/Grand Avenue in the West Valley was closed from Thursday night to Friday morning after a suspect fled from police and crashed, authorities said.

The eastbound lanes of US 60 were shut down at Thompson Ranch/Thunderbird Road in El Mirage until about 8:15 a.m. Friday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The incident began just before 10 p.m. Thursday, when officers saw a vehicle parked in a restricted area and heard what they believed were gunshots, according to the El Mirage Police Department.

When the officers approached the vehicle, the driver fled. Other officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped off east on US 60 until it collided with another vehicle, police said.

When officers arrived at the crash site, they found a man inside the suspect vehicle with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized with minor injuries.

El Mirage detectives and Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers are handling the investigation into the incident.

The crash did not affect the westbound lanes.
