State Route 51 lane restrictions near Camelback Road lifted after 7 weeks

For the first time in nearly two months, motorists on State Route 51 in central Phoenix don’t have to worry about squeezing over to the right.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said Monday the northbound lane restrictions near Camelback Road that started July 27 have been lifted.

During the seven weeks of restrictions, which reduced traffic to two lanes, crews replaced about 700 feet of damaged pavement and repaired SR 51’s drainage system.

Workers removed barricades and restriped the roadway over the weekend to complete the work, which is part of a larger pavement improvement project.

ADOT started the $17.8 million SR 51 project in March and is aiming to wrap it up in late fall.

SR 51 pavement improvement project continues

The goal is to rehabilitate the outdated pavement over 9.5 miles between Interstate 10 and Shea Boulevard.

The old pavement has been removed, and crews have moved on to using diamond grinding to smooth out the concrete. Diamond grinding is done with specialized machines with rotating drums containing diamond-tipped blades.

The work will require additional closures on the SR 51 mainline, ramps and cross streets, primarily on weekends and during overnight hours.
