Driver charged with manslaughter after passenger killed in Scottsdale crash

A 21-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after a single-vehicle crash in Scottsdale early Sunday killed his passenger, police said.

Ahmed Adel Al-Hassainy was driving northbound on Drinkwater Boulevard around 2:40 a.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole near Civic Center Plaza, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.

Mario Gonzalez, 21, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken from the scene with life-threatening injuries and later died at a hospital. Police did not release a hometown for either man.

Al-Hassainy was treated at the hospital, released and then booked into the Scottsdale Jail on one count of manslaughter. Alcohol and speed are considered contributing factors, police said.

Detectives are awaiting lab results and further analysis of vehicle evidence before submitting additional charges to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, police said.

Drinkwater Boulevard was closed for about five hours while investigators with the department’s Vehicle Crimes and Reconstruction Unit processed the scene.
