The weekend closure of northbound State Route 51 has been extended through Monday morning, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced.

The northbound side of the freeway — which is shut between Indian School Road and Colter Street — was supposed to reopen at noon on Sunday, but will now reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday.

As part of the closure, the on-ramps at McDowell and Thomas roads are closed. The off-ramp at Highland Avenue is also shut.

The extension was due to crews continuing striping work and implementing a traffic switch as part of a pavement improvement project, which has been causing around-the-clock restrictions since July 27.

The traffic authority advised motorists to get around the closure by taking westbound Indian School Road to northbound 16th Steet to eastbound Colter Street. Drivers can also take eastbound Indian School Road to northbound 24th Street to westbound Glendale Avenue.

When the closure ends Monday, northbound SR 51 will shift to be narrowed to the two right lanes from Highland Avenue to Camelback Road until September.
