Flood watch in effect as storms, rain expected to hit Valley

A flood watch is in effect until Monday morning as storms are expected to make their way into the Valley on Sunday.

The National Weather Service for Phoenix said the Phoenix metro area should see strong storms and localized heavy rain. It noted weather activity could also include frequent lightning, strong to severe winds, blowing dust and small hail.

“The environment will remain favorable for thunderstorm activity, especially as we head into this evening and potentially tonight. And there may be another round … as we head into the day on Monday,” NWS Meteorologist Gabriel Lujero told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

The meteorologist added that the storms will move southwest.

The weather authority explained that the lower deserts could receive anywhere from half an inch to an inch of rain.

“A watch basically means that conditions are favorable, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to get flooding,” Lujero said. “It’s just that the potential is there for thunderstorms to produce the heavy rainfall that could produce flash flooding.”

Despite the rain, the forecasted high for Phoenix on Sunday is 105 degrees. However, things are supposed to cool down a little bit on Monday with a high of 98 degrees.

Isolated showers on Saturday night hit parts of the East Valley as well as areas north of the Phoenix metro, sprinkling anywhere from 0.04 to 0.28 inches of rain.
